'Our happy hour became a hungry hour': logging, subsistence and social relations in Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands has relied on highly unsustainable industrial logging since the 1980s. While development narrative around emphasizes its macro-economic importance, it structurally overlooks impacts local people's lives. Based 200 qualitative interviews conducted in 25 villages and 14 operations Malaita Province between 2016 2019, this paper demonstrates that of subsistence social relations are systemic rather than incidental. By making use interview quotes, gives voice to rural Islanders. The results show industry fails generate lasting benefits, while practices undermine livelihoods, especially fisheries. Logging triggers conflict long outlasts themselves, causes sexual exploitation, facilitates excessive alcohol reinforces gender disparities by stru cturally excluding women from decision-making benefit-sharing. This calls for a stronger focus forestry science, policy practice.
